It also encourages patience and mindfulness, empowering us to face challenges with composure.Įmbracing the profound benefits of silence, we can reclaim our focus, unlock our creative potential, and find inner peace amidst the chaos of the world. Research shows that silence is pivotal for optimal learning and improved productivity. Moreover, silence provides a tranquil space that nurtures inner calmness and mental clarity, essential in combating the stresses of everyday life. By immersing ourselves in silence, we cultivate self-awareness and foster personal growth. Silence unlocks our creativity, allowing innovative ideas to flourish. The benefits of silence are profound.Įnhanced concentration becomes attainable when we create an environment free from the cacophony of modern life. In a world filled with distractions and noise, it becomes increasingly clear that we need moments of silence to maintain focus and productivity. When you learn to savor silent moments, you’ll have more patience in daily hassles like traffic jams and long lines at the store. When regularly practiced, your tolerance levels for becoming impatient will likely grow too. Learning to enjoy silence cultivates calmness and peacefulness. In today’s fast-paced world, almost everyone has a short fuse for frustration. Cultivated Patience: Silence encourages patience and mindfulness, allowing you to navigate challenges with a greater sense of composure.Ĭonstant noise from the media and our day-to-day lives causes many of us to miss out on the benefits of silence. Taking time to daydream may actually improve your productivity tenfold. In an article by Inc., research suggests that doing nothing and remaining silent has been reported to increase the production of new brain cells which could make you more productive in the future simply by doing nothing. How do you measure productivity? If you are running on very little sleep and trying to complete as many tasks as possible in as short a time as possible, you may be missing out on the benefits of silence. Increased Productivity: Embracing moments of silence can help increase productivity by reducing distractions and improving task efficiency. In the 21st century, the exposure of children to tablets, cell phones, and video games has increased the level of hearing impairment which affects their ability to learn and develop correctly. As a child is exposed to more noise, their school performance suffers and they experience greater struggles with concentration levels. UPMC Health has reported that the level of noise exposure affects a child’s abilities as a student. Improved Learning: Research suggests that excessive noise hinders learning, making silence essential for optimal information processing and knowledge retention. Once you become aware of the changes you’d like to see, you’ll be able to make a conscious improvement to the patterns of your life.ĥ. Taking time to self-reflect will help you figure out if your life is working the way you’d like it to. However, you can improve your awareness by practicing silence. When your attention is constantly being drawn away, you may never uncover how to improve your life. Many distractions and noises flood our world. Heightened Self-Awareness: By immersing yourself in silence, you can cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness, fostering personal growth and introspection. When you shut out the outside world and focus solely on your craft, you can experience some of the best creative work, even though brainstorming with others offers its own set of benefits. Psychoanalyst Ester Buchholz has previously explained the best creative work is often completed in solitude or after a period of solitude. An article on Medium explains that visionary scientists like Albert Einstein and Sir Isaac Newton worked almost exclusively alone for the majority of their lives. Some studies have shown how important silence is to the success of individuals as they move through the creative process. Without a doubt, creativity is an important part of life, and silence is an important part of the creative process. Boosted Creativity: Embracing silence can stimulate your imagination and inspire innovative thinking, unlocking new ideas and solutions. A silent environment or one with just a little background noise will help you concentrate the best. The ability to focus on different tasks is often accompanied by a little background noise.įocus is almost always lost when a sound reaches around 80 decibels. One of the major reasons why silence has become an important part of everyday life is the ability to focus as the modern world and its various noises enter your brain all at once. Enhanced Concentration: Silence creates an environment conducive to focus and concentration, allowing you to perform tasks more effectively. I would highly advise Canada Transfers and steer clear of USA unless you want to get screwed! Canada is impeccable We have used them over 15 times and never ever ever have had a problem. We have ALWAYS used Canada Transfers and couldn't get a lift at the last minute. This is the first and last time I will use USA transfers. In the end, they would only refund me $25.00 of the $85.00. I am not responsible for the traffic either. I request a refund from USA transfers and they said "We are not responsible for the traffic".how convenient. I spent $80.00 - $85.00 for the transfer, after 1.5 hours, I finally hailed a taxi at $70.00. They knew the traffic was like this, they failed to plan ahead. They blamed it on the "traffic" (assuming it was related to the uber and taxi standoff). There were a line of pissed off people behind me waiting for their "pre-arranged" transfers and they were not getting their rides either. My van did not pick me up at the airport and trying to get any of the employees to visit with me wasn't happening. I had a pre-arranged round trip transfer from the Cancun Airport to the Ultramar Ferry Dock. If you've been driven around the Cancun area, you know it can be crowded and busy and eye opening (or closing in some cases) but should you find yourself needing a ride next time you're in the area, give them a call, be shocked by the excellent pricing, and ask for Cruz to be your driver/city guide/story teller extraordinar.you will not be disappointed. He made us laugh a lot, shared stories of his life, his love for his future bride and kept us very entertained while being a very aware driver, respectful to local drivers and other transport drivers as well. He's very good at what he does, but he is also respectful, cheerful, kind, entertaining, and very sweet, all while driving a passenger van full of tired Americans on the 1.5 hours it took to get to the airport from our hotel. Not his real name of course, well Cruz is, but the Cruiser part just suites him. Our latest adventure to Akumal ended and we had the pleasure of riding to CUN with Cruz De La Crucero. We've used them multiple times to take us to the resort and return us to the airport and they have been on time, kind, knowledgeable, and quite comedic every time. Should you find yourself in need of transportation from CUN airport to Telum or anywhere in between, we highly recommend USA Transfers. The price was low compared to other companies I checked and I felt safe the entire time. All in all, the next time I visit Cancun I will use USA transfers again. Our flight was delayed two hours because the pilots were stuck in traffic! We even saw the traffic from the plane as we finally took off 2 hours late. Other travelers who flew out on this day experienced hour long delays getting to the airport later that afternoon. The driver was on time and got us there quickly. There is construction going on near the airport that has been causing major traffic and significant delays. Thank goodness we left at 12pm on Dec 21st. On our last day I reserved the service back to the airport. Once again, the driver shared personal stories with us, gave us some tips for the hotel zone and got us there safely. The drive was about 45 minutes to the next destination. The driver waited but it cost us an additional $30 USD which was fine. This time we had a delay in our departure due to the hotels negligence. The driver arrived on time and once again helped me and my guests with our bags. The second transfer was from my current hotel which was in Costa Mujeres to the hotel zone. The remainder of my guest arrived later that evening. We arrived safely at my hotel and he also helped me with my bags. He suggested areas to visit and we also discussed where we were from. My driver, I forget his name was very polite and kept conversation. The employee confirmed my trip itinerary and summoned my vehicle. When I arrived in Cancun that afternoon, I followed the instructions in my email and met the representative outside of the airport. You have the option to prepay or pay upon arrival at your destination. Once from the airport to my first hotel, then to my second hotel and back to the airport. I used this company 3 times during the duration of my vacation. Of course you will filter through and find some negative feedback but I feel you should experience the service for yourself and draw your own conclusion. In comparison, USA Transfers had stellar reviews and was priced right. I searched for private transfers to avoid having to ride with a large group of people and to also avoid multiple stops on my journey to the hotel. I traveled to Cancun for my birthday the weekend of December 16, 2022. In the 1990s, Grodin made his mark as a liberal commentator on radio and TV. Steve Martin, who co-starred with Grodin in 1984's “The Lonely Guy," remembered him as “one of the funniest people I ever met." (The lawyer instead took a shine to Letterman.) Hosting “Saturday Night Live,” he pretended to not understand live television, ruining all the sketches. In his many late-night appearances, he once brought a lawyer with him to threaten David Letterman for defamation. His commitment, whether acting across De Niro or Miss Piggy, was unsurpassed. With bone-dry understatement, Grodin could steal entire scenes with just a look. Known for his dead-pan style and everyday looks, Grodin also appeared in “Dave,” “The Woman in Red,” “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Heaven Can Wait.” On Broadway, he starred with Ellen Burstyn in the long-running 1970s comedy “Same Time, Next Year,” and he found many other outlets for his talents. One of the great cranky comedic geniuses.Charles Grodin, the droll, offbeat actor and writer who scored as a caddish newlywed in “The Heartbreak Kid” and later had roles ranging from Robert De Niro’s counterpart in the comic thriller “Midnight Run” to the bedeviled father in the “Beethoven” comedies, has died. "One particular case was a boy named Brandon Hein in California, who was sentenced to life under the felony murder law. "It wasn't just like he would have someone as a guest on his talk show and then move on it would become a lifelong journey for him where he would hold onto it," his son said. He hosted a talk show on CNBC ("The Charles Grodin Show," 1995-98) that dealt with the social and political issues of the day. He also wrote a number of books, along with a New York Daily News column that ran for nearly 10 years. He did collect an Emmy as part of the writing staff for another Paul Simon TV special in 1978, "The Paul Simon Special." He scored an Outer Circle Critics actor prize for the stage run of "Same Time, Next Year," which racked up 1,400 performances. Surprisingly, Grodin never won a major acting award. The actor broke through to mainstream success in 1972 with his leading turn in "The Heartbreak Kid" and starred in films through the ’70s and ’80s, including "Seems Like Old Times," Albert Brooks' "Real Life" (one of the first mockumentaries) and the much-maligned "Ishtar." Nick Grodin said, "I know he was proud of the Simon and Garfunkel special he directed, because it has to do with human rights and social issues that were not very popular at the time." I think Johnny Carson really appreciated it." A lot of people did not think it was a joke. "He didn't think it was very interesting to just go on and say, 'Oh, I'm in this movie coming out,' so he adopted this comedic persona where he would be angry. "That was a comedy persona he adopted for when he would go on talk shows," said Nick Grodin, who confirmed his father's death to The Times. He extended that to his many talk-show appearances, in which he seemed uncomfortable and even reluctant to be there - all an act, according to his son, Nick. Known for leading or coleading classic comedies such as "The Heartbreak Kid" and "Midnight Run" and for ruthlessly stealing scenes in "Heaven Can Wait," "Dave" and "The Great Muppet Caper," Grodin cultivated a screen persona that mined his own discomfort for laughs. Lately, if the hook is small and it’s really wedged into the corner of the trout’s mouth - or deeply embedded in the tongue or other delicate area - I’ll just snip the tippet and leave the hook in the fish. That sudden shake increases the force on the hook, and it sometimes takes out a part of the trout’s mouth. I’ve always been careful when removing a barbless hook, but I recall a time or two when the fish suddenly shook its head when I had the hook in my forceps or Ketchum catch-and-release tool. It’s easy to take a chunk out of trout’s mouth when removing the hook, especially if the trout is small. Careless anglers leave barbs on their hooks - or just rip the hook out. Survivorsįirst, it’s rarely the trout’s fault. A trout with a damaged mouth always seemed a little diminished - as though it made a trip to a city park pond and got in trouble.īut I’m changing my mind about scarred trout. Trout by nature are gorgeous animals that live - mostly - in gorgeous places. I’ve always been a little bummed when I see a big, old trout that is disfigured. I get giddy when I see sharp-edged, white-tipped fins on a big rainbow trout - or a thick brown trout with lots of red spots and a perfect jaw with a few sharp teeth. I think all of us prefer to catch perfect, gorgeous trout - sleek, strong, brightly colored fish that show no mishandling from another angler. I’m always shocked to see how much mouth a trout can lose - and still thrive and grow past 18 inches long. Other times, the fish has lost parts of its mouth - or even part of the lower jaw. Sometimes it’s just a little scar in the mouth. Big, wild trout from catch-and-release fisheries are often hooked and released several times in their lifetimes.Īll of those encounters leave a mark on the trout. Later, when I’ve gotten home and download the photos, I sometimes notice that the trout is far from gorgeous. Mosaic has the distinction of being John’s only solo comic book series to date (not counting the current Green Lantern comic, in which he’s depicted as the lead character). So every time I hear the argument, because of the cartoon, that John “should” be Green Lantern, I kind of have to laugh.Īnd the funny thing is, the ‘90s Green Lantern comic I most want to revisit is Green Lantern: Mosaic, which because it was written by a creator later disgraced due to his involvement with child pornography, is represented in Green Lantern: John Stewart - A Celebration of 50 Years by a single page of artwork. Those were all human Green Lanterns in a vast galactic cast of ringslingers bursting with rich tradition. I knew all about Alan Scott, the original, and of course Hal Jordan, and Guy Gardner. “My” Green Lantern, the one I read in the ‘90s, was Kyle Rayner, with whom John shared adventures and character growth during that time. Holograms can now also be entirely computer-generated to show objects or scenes that never existed. Holographic portraiture often resorts to a non-holographic intermediate imaging procedure, to avoid the dangerous high-powered pulsed lasers which would be needed to optically "freeze" moving subjects as perfectly as the extremely motion-intolerant holographic recording process requires. In common practice, however, major image quality compromises are made to remove the need for laser illumination to view the hologram, and in some cases, to make it. The 3D image can, however, be viewed with non-laser light. A microscopic level of detail throughout the recorded scene can be reproduced. In its early days, holography required high-power and expensive lasers, but currently, mass-produced low-cost laser diodes, such as those found on DVD recorders and used in other common applications, can be used to make holograms and have made holography much more accessible to low-budget researchers, artists and dedicated hobbyists. Optical holography needs a laser light to record the light field. Various methods of converting the variation in transmission to a variation in refractive index (known as "bleaching") were developed which enabled much more efficient holograms to be produced. They were not very efficient as the produced grating absorbed much of the incident light. Early holograms used silver halide photographic emulsions as the recording medium. The development of the laser enabled the first practical optical holograms that recorded 3D objects to be made in 1962 by Yuri Denisyuk in the Soviet Union and by Emmett Leith and Juris Upatnieks at the University of Michigan, US. Horizontal symmetric text, by Dieter Jung In this sense, holograms do not have just the illusion of depth but are truly three-dimensional images. That is, the view of the image from different angles represents the subject viewed from similar angles. When suitably lit, the interference pattern diffracts the light into an accurate reproduction of the original light field, and the objects that were in it exhibit visual depth cues such as parallax and perspective that change realistically with the different angles of viewing. It is an encoding of the light field as an interference pattern of variations in the opacity, density, or surface profile of the photographic medium. The holographic medium, for example the object produced by a holographic process (which may be referred to as a hologram) is usually unintelligible when viewed under diffuse ambient light. A hologram is a photographic recording of a light field, rather than an image formed by a lens. The reproduced light field can generate an image which still has the depth, parallax, and other properties of the original scene. The word holography comes from the Greek words ὅλος ( holos "whole") and γραφή ( graphē " writing" or " drawing").Ī hologram is a recording of an interference pattern which can reproduce a 3D light field using diffraction. The technique as originally invented is still used in electron microscopy, where it is known as electron holography, but optical holography did not really advance until the development of the laser in 1960. This discovery was an unexpected result of research into improving electron microscopes at the British Thomson-Houston Company (BTH) in Rugby, England, and the company filed a patent in December 1947 (patent GB685286). His work, done in the late 1940s, was built on pioneering work in the field of X-ray microscopy by other scientists including Mieczysław Wolfke in 1920 and William Lawrence Bragg in 1939. The Hungarian- British physicist Dennis Gabor (in Hungarian: Gábor Dénes) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1971 "for his invention and development of the holographic method". The resulting digital image is then printed onto a suitable mask or film and illuminated by a suitable source to reconstruct the wavefront of interest. Holograms can also be computer-generated by modelling the two wavefronts and adding them together digitally. When only the second wavefront illuminates the interference pattern, it is diffracted to recreate the original wavefront. In principle, it is possible to make a hologram for any type of wave.Ī hologram is made by superimposing a second wavefront (normally called the reference beam) on the wavefront of interest, thereby generating an interference pattern which is recorded on a physical medium. Holography is best known as a method of generating real three-dimensional images, but it also has a wide range of other applications. Holography is a technique that enables a wavefront to be recorded and later re-constructed. Two photographs of a single hologram taken from different viewpoints For other uses, see Hologram (disambiguation). Do you have a table of contents for your notebook? No, me neither.
